How Does Tepezza Work?

Tepezza is a medication used to treat thyroid eye diseases, also known as Graves Eye Disease manufactured by Horizon Pharma USA, Inc.

Thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune disorder that attacks the tissue around the eyes. Symptoms include dry or watery eyes, vision problems, and eye redness.

Tepezza is given as an intervenous injection in a doctor’s office. The medicine is given slowly, the infusion can take 60-90 minutes, and each dose is given once every three weeks for a total of eight doses. This drug is not meant for long-term treatment.

What are the Side Effects?

Some common side effects of Tepezza include:

Is Tepezza FDA Approved?

This means they become available on the market sooner and then are studied to prove their safety and efficacy. It also means that Tepezza is the first FDA-approved drug to treat thyroid eye disease.

There were two clinical trials done prior to FDA approval to study the safety of Tepezza. It was found that 10% of patients in the clinical trials reported some form of hearing impairment including deafness, eustachian tube dysfunction, hyperacusis, hypoacusis, and autophony.

A new study from 2021 finds that up to two-thirds of patients who take Tepezza can be affected by hearing loss.

This study included 26 patients who were treated with at least four infusions of Tepezza. 65% of them reported new hearing problems including:

• Ringing in the ears
• Ear plugging sensation
• Autophony

There are currently additional studies being conducted to evaluate the long-term effects of Tepezza.
