About the Prescription Drug Entyvio

Entyvio is the brand name for the drug vedolizumab for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Entyvio is a gut-selective biologic, meaning it works by blocking certain natural substances in the body to help decrease swelling in the gut. It is given by injection into a vein by a healthcare professional.

Patients often take Entyvio continuously every eight weeks to maintain the effects. The drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2013. The medication is prescribed to roughly 27% of patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

What is Interstitial Lung Disease?

Interstitial lung disease is a term describing a number of disorders that cause progressive scarring of lung tissue. The scarring eventually affects your ability to breathe and get enough oxygen in your bloodstream. One lung scarring occurs, it is generally irreversible.

The primary symptoms of interstitial lung disease are:

  • Dry cough
  • Shortness of breath while at rest, or aggravated by exertion

Interstitial lung disease can lead to some life-threatening complications, which include:

  • Pulmonary hypertension, which is high blood pressure in your lungs. This condition only affects the arteries in your lungs, which is a serious illness that gets progressively worse.
  • Right-sided heart failure. This occurs when the less muscular right ventricle of your heart has to pump harder than usual to move blood through obstructed pulmonary arteries. This is often a consequence of pulmonary hypertension.
  • Respiratory failure, which occurs in the end stage of chronic interstitial lung disease.

How does Entyvio Work?

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are caused by inflammation in the gut. Entyvio works by blocking some of the signals of the white blood cells in the intestines to decrease inflammation of other symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s.

Entyvio is given by injection every eight weeks, after the first three injections, in a doctor’s office. It cannot be self-administered.

Did Entyvio have a Warning Label for Serious Lung Issues?

Takeda Pharmaceuticals did not provide a warning label that the drug could cause severe lung issues. The only warnings offered by the manufacturer focus on allergic reactions, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and liver problems. Multiple FDA trials focused on the potential risk of PML, with no mention of lung issues.

The first trial started in 2009, focusing on 895 participants. The study found that the most common side effects the patients experienced included:

  • Headache
  • Joint paint
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Sinus infection
  • Throat pain

It was also noted that Entyvio can cause severe allergic and infusion reactions, and it is possible for a person to get progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. However, no mentions of serious lung issues were noted at that time.

Another study began in 2015, ending in 2021, including over 5,000 patients across 21 countries worldwide. Results are still pending.

However, there have not been any updates to the warning labels to include severe lung issues.

Is There an Average Dangerous Drug Lawsuit Settlement?

Every dangerous drug lawsuit is different and there is no average settlement. The amount of compensation depends on a number of factors, which include:

  • The strength of liability against the pharmaceutical company, which is based on legal, medical, and scientific evidence.
  • The total settlement amount. The drug manufacturer often proposes a lump-sum settlement which is divided among all litigants.
  • The number of claimants in the lawsuit. Settlement shares are divided between all lawsuit participants.
  • The specific harm suffered by each person. Not every litigant receives the same amount.
  • Most settlements also address the medical expenses, lost income, and other financial losses suffered by the patient.

Diagnosis of interstitial lung disease or fibrosis of the lungs is life-altering for a person and family. It affects how people live their daily life, performs ordinary functions, and live independently.
