Corey Ruzicka Named Drug Lawsuit Source Scholarship Winner

Corey Ruzicka College Scholarship WInnerSOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Drug Lawsuit Source is pleased to announce Corey Ruzicka, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., as the recipient of the 2023 Drug Lawsuit Source College Fund Scholarship.

Established in 2015, the Drug Lawsuit Source College Fund Scholarship offers $1,000 to one student each year who best exemplifies determination and perseverance to succeed in their academic endeavors.

Ruzicka is part of a dual enrollment program through Yampa Valley High School and Colorado Mountain College. They will begin attending Colorado Mesa University in fall 2024, studying teaching, with a future goal of teaching elementary education.

At a young age, Ruzicka knew he was different than other students. With the encouragement of their parents and several supportive teachers, Ruzicka began to find books, websites, and virtual communities that helped him realize and embrace their identity.

“As a result of these lived experiences, I have decided to pursue my Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion,” Ruzicka writes in their essay. “I intend to shine a light on the harmful gender-normative practices that schools perpetuate. More importantly, I aspire to broaden students’ perception of the expansive nature of gender through stories, media, and art.”

Ruzicka currently works at his local public library, where he helps the circulation manager acquire books with gender-non-conforming characters. “Representation in books is life-altering,” Ruzicka said.

“We’re proud to name Corey as this year’s scholarship recipient,” Buckfire Law president Lawrence J. Buckfire said. “Their maturity and want to help others find their true selves is commendable. But their compassion and concern for others who may be struggling with their identity is most admirable.”

Each year, the Drug Lawsuit Source College Fund Scholarship is available to one student who best displays determination and perseverance, much like Dragos, in their academic endeavors. The student must be enrolled in an accredited college, university, or junior college; a high school senior enrolled in summer or fall classes; or attend a trade school in the United States.

The deadline to apply for the 2024 Drug Lawsuit Source College Fund Scholarship is Nov. 1, 2024. Details for the scholarship is posted on www.druglawsuitsource.com.
