Melanie Norma Fitch Named 2018 Drug Lawsuit Source Single Parent Scholarship Winner

SOUTHFIELD, MI — Drug Lawsuit Source is pleased to announce Melanie Norma Fitch, of Richton Park, Ill., has been named this year’s recipient of the 2018 Drug Lawsuit Source Single Parent Scholarship.Melanie Norma Fitch, woman smiling with glasses on and black shirt on. hair pulled up into pony tail

Established in 2015, the Drug Lawsuit Source Single Parent Scholarship was created to help take some of the financial burden off single-parent families who are in pursuit of higher education. Each year, Drug Lawsuit Source — an online resource for information about different diseases and medical conditions — awards $1,000 to a single parent who is helping raise at least one child.

Fitch has overcome several battles in her life to be able to return as a full-time student to acquire a bachelor’s degree in social work at Governors State University. After being newly divorced and now a single parent, Fitch moved closer to family to take care of her father who was diagnosed with dementia.

“I had not heard of this scholarship until I was in the financial aid office of Governors State University where I am working on a Bachelors in Social Work,” Fitch said. “It was such a simple exchange — the woman handed me a flyer, and went about her day. So many people apply for these things, but I tried anyway because I don’t let opportunities pass, even small ones.”

In her essay, Fitch mentioned her desire to continue her education, but said the  religion she was raised in discouraged women from pursuing western education. As she pushed through road blocks, Fitch said she was determined to provide positive examples and opportunities for her daughter, Nitsaniyah.

“I am so appreciative of this scholarship,” Fitch said. “Receiving this award was a wonderful surprise. It can be so challenging to get ahead, and what may seem like a small gesture to some could make a huge difference in the life of someone else. That is certainly the case with me.”

Fitch plans on continuing her education until she receives her master’s degree in social work. She wants to form her own agency to work with people, particularly youth in the foster care system, survivors of sexual trauma and provide marriage/family counseling.

Each year, the Drug Lawsuit Source Single Parent Scholarship is available to one student of any age who is a single parent helping to raise at least one child, currently enrolled in a high school, trade school, apprentice school, junior college, college, university, or graduate school in the United States with a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

The deadline to apply for the 2018 Drug Lawsuit Source Single Parent Scholarship was Nov. 1, 2018. Details for the 2019 scholarship will be posted in the near future on www.druglawsuitsource.com.
